Project Overview
The Pequannock Aqueduct Rehabilitation is a critical infrastructure upgrade aimed at preserving and extending the life of Newark’s historic water delivery system. Dating back to the 1880s, the twin 42- and 48-inch aqueducts have long served as a backbone for the city’s high-quality drinking water. This multi-phase effort focuses on the first six miles of upstream piping, addressing operability, sustainability, and long-term performance.
International Valve supplied high-performance Vent-Tech air release and vacuum relief valves—key components that protect pipeline integrity, optimize flow performance, and safeguard operations in the event of seismic activity.
2
Challenge Faced
While the system remains one of the most effective in the state, age and regulatory pressures have prompted urgent upgrades. With federal and state mandates requiring improved safety, security, and environmental compliance, the city needed a reliable valve partner to ensure operational integrity and high-performance air/vacuum relief under demanding conditions. The scale of the valves required—some of the largest International Valve has produced—adds a layer of precision and complexity to the project.
3
Solution Provided
International Valve is supplying large-diameter Vent-Tech air release and vacuum relief valves engineered for high vacuum relief performance and zero-pressure sealing. These valves will help maintain safe, reliable operation throughout the aqueduct’s critical upstream segments. The project marks one of International Valve’s most demanding valve builds to date, reflecting our unmatched engineering capabilities and support for legacy water systems.

Results and Outcomes
Historic System Preservation
Extends the operational life of the 19th-century aqueduct system while modernizing performance and reliability.
Regulatory Compliance
Ensures the city meets EPA and DEP requirements for safe, accessible, and secure water infrastructure.
Optimized Performance
High vacuum relief performance supports the aqueduct’s safe function during maintenance, shutdowns, or unplanned events.
National Capability, Local Impact
Further demonstrates International Valve’s ability to support critical infrastructure from coast to coast, reinforcing our position as a trusted national partner.
5
Conclusion
The Pequannock Aqueduct Rehabilitation represents a powerful intersection of history and innovation. International Valve’s contribution underscores the importance of reliable, engineered valve solutions for aging infrastructure—ensuring safe, clean water for generations to come.
